Title: Impure Language Practice: The Historical Gap in Rancière’s Conception of Language
Abstract: This paper examines Jacques Rancière’s conception of language, focusing on the “impure language practices” and their underlying historical deficiencies. Rancière understands language as a form of practice, emphasizing its role in reflecting concrete realities and disrupting consensual orders. However, his theoretical framework predominantly operates within a synchronic perspective, paying insufficient attention to the connection between linguistic practice and specific historical contexts, which limits its historical dimension and the agency of the subject. By systematically analyzing Rancière’s theory of language practice and juxtaposing it with Marxist and Maoist conceptions of practice, this study explores the tensions and gaps between Rancièrean language practice and historical reality. The findings suggest that impure language practices not only reveal the limitations of Rancière’s framework in addressing the relationships among language, subject, and reality, but also indicate that linguistic practice should transcend structural constraints and embrace historical specificity and diversity. This perspective offers a novel theoretical pathway for understanding the complex interplay between language, subjectivity, and history.
